I've been to two weddings in Mexico. I crashed the first one and was invited to second. But even though I was invited, I still kind of crashed that one too.
The first wedding was an accident. My friend Roberto Vizcon won two tickets to Cozumel and invited me to to go with him. We were there in December, 1998, the week before Christmas. We were having dinner outside one night and a wedding reception was underway right next to us. After we finished eating, we walked over to listen to the mariachi band that was performing for the wedding guests.
A guy from the wedding walked up and asked if we wanted some drinks. We said "No, we aren't guests of the wedding." He laughed and said "It's okay, I'm the groom, have fun." We took the drinks, crashing the wedding and enjoying the music.
I didn't return to Mexico again until November, 2017. My friend Scott Yurcheshen was getting married and he invited me to not only attend the wedding but to be his best man. Jessica's sister Yessenia would be the maid of honor.
Scott and Jessica planned a destination wedding in Mazatlán. I immediately went online and booked a room at the hotel. They offered an all-inclusive option, but since I was going for the wedding, I didn't see the point of paying extra for all-inclusive.
Once I arrived at the hotel, I quickly learned that we were the only guests who hadn't booked the all-inclusive package. Every part of the wedding, from the dinner, the sunset cruise, the beers in the swimming pool and even the wedding reception was based on the fact that it was an all-inclusive resort.
At breakfast the first morning, I had to pay for breakfast, which was pretty inexpensive. After that, no one checked. I had a delicious pre-wedding dinner and thoroughly enjoyed all the food and drinks at the reception.
The wedding itself was great and I was thrilled to be a part of it.
I felt a little guilty that I didn't pay what everyone else was paying for their room. And I probably never would have gotten away with "crashing" if I hadn't been part of a large group.
Notes
After the wedding, I headed to Guadalajara, which is an amazing city. We shot an episode of the TV program "Peruanos en el Mundo" there and I have linked it below.
I returned again the following November to shoot a story in Leon, Mexico with Peruvian Soccer star Pedro Aquino. That story is also linked.
