WPEC News 12, the CBS affiliate based in West Palm Beach, will introduce the market's first 7 p.m. local newscast Sept. 5, with news anchors Liz Quirantes and Curt Fonger, weather expert John Matthews and sports director Pat Murphy.
The launch is a primary election day and the day that Katie Couric begins her job as anchor of the CBS Evening News.
"This will be a traditional evening newscast," said Executive News Director Steve Hunsicker. The show will have "in-depth local news, breaking news and severe weather coverage," he said, citing the July Nielsen "sweeps," which showed that the station's 6 p.m. newscast grew its household ratings by 19 percent from a year ago.
WPEC is the CBS affiliate for Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. It is owned by Freedom Communications Inc. of Orange County, Calif.
